What Should You Do If You Have a Fever?

1. Get Adequate Rest

Fever can make the body feel weak. Taking sufficient rest is essential for recovery and helps the body regain its energy.

2. Keep Your Body Cool

Wear light and breathable cotton clothing. Avoid extremely hot or cold environments and stay in a comfortable temperature.

3. Stay Hydrated

Fever often causes dehydration. Drink plenty of water, coconut water, soups, or oral rehydration solutions (ORS) to maintain hydration.

4. Take Paracetamol

If the fever is high and accompanied by body aches or discomfort, take paracetamol or similar medications as advised by a doctor. Do not self-medicate without consulting a healthcare professional.

5. Use a Cold Compress

To reduce body temperature, use a cold compress or wipe the body with a wet towel. This can provide relief and help lower the fever.

When to See a Doctor

1. If the fever lasts more than three days.

2. If symptoms such as vomiting, headache, difficulty breathing, or chest pain accompany the fever.

3. If a child or elderly person has a fever, consult a doctor immediately.

4. If the temperature exceeds 103°F.

5. If rashes or unusual symptoms appear.

Causes of Fever

1. Viral Infections: Common colds, coughs, or the flu are typical causes of fever.

2. Bacterial Infections: Fever can result from stomach infections, urinary tract infections (UTIs), or pneumonia.

3. Dengue or Malaria: These mosquito-borne diseases often cause fever.

4. Post-Vaccination Reactions: Mild fever may occur after receiving certain vaccines.

5. Heatstroke: Extreme heat can cause the body to overheat, leading to fever.

Preventive Measures

1. Maintain cleanliness and hygiene.

2. Wash your hands regularly.

3. Use mosquito nets or repellents to prevent mosquito bites.

4. Eat a balanced diet to boost immunity.

5. Drink plenty of water and avoid extreme temperatures.

Fever is not a disease but a symptom. Identifying its root cause and seeking timely medical attention can help manage it effectively. Stay informed and stay healthy.
